The National Medical Commission (NMC) introduced the National Exit Test (NExT) regulations on June 27, 2023. These regulations were meticulously developed, incorporating insights from around 6,500 comments received during the consultation process. Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya conveyed this information to the Rajya Sabha on August 8, 2023 (Tuesday).

The draft regulations underwent thorough discussions and gained approval during an NMC meeting, where both universities and state medical councils were actively engaged. Responding to a query, Mandaviya elaborated on its process.

Incorporating feedback from students, including those from Tamil Nadu, the NExT implementation has been temporarily deferred, as highlighted in a public notice dated July 13, 2023. The Minister also acknowledged concerns expressed by students.

The NExT is envisioned as a comprehensive computer-based exam, featuring high-quality multiple-choice questions. Its primary objective is to assess advanced domains of knowledge that are aligned with the expected competencies of modern medical practitioners. This exam holds significance as it certifies the eligibility of medical graduates to practice contemporary medicine in India, effectively functioning as a licensure exam.

The NExT will play a pivotal role in establishing eligibility and rankings for individuals aspiring to pursue postgraduate medical education within various medical specialities. Consequently, it will serve as an entrance exam for admission into postgraduate programmes, encompassing domestic and foreign medical graduates, as clarified by the Minister.
