Is mathematics beautiful?

Apeejay Institute of Management & Engineering Technical Campus Jalandhar organises a lecture featuring interesting aspects of this subject

Apeejay Institute of Management & Engineering Technical Campus (AIMETC) in Jalandhar recently organised “Beauty of Mathematics” lecture. The session witnessed participation of students from B.Tech and BCA.

The invigorating session began with Mehak and Fagun from BCA 2nd semester presenting a talk on the importance and beauty of mathematics by the patterns, symmetry, golden ratio, art and music. They further talked about the famous mathematicians Aryabhata, Srinivasa Ramanujan and Shakuntala Devi and their great works and concluded with the applications of mathematics in the real world.

Radhika, a BCA student from 2nd semester, engaged the students while delivering a presentation on the topic “How to overcome math’s phobia”. Interactive discussions and Q&A made the session more impactful. She talked about the fear of mathematics that students face generally and discussed the things students can do to overcome that fear. She acknowledged the fact of changing the mindset to overcome the math phobia. Further she asked the students to set realistic goals, to practice regularly, to utilise multiple learning resources and the use of abacus to overcome the fear.

A comprehensive PPT on “Importance of Mathematics in our everyday life” was presented by Yuvraj Singh, Deepak Chaudhary from BCA 2nd semester, in which they explained the uses of math in various fields. The presentation highlighted how to improve problems-solving skills, make financial decisions, and so on. Further, they talked about the great career options for students who work in the field of mathematics.

Kashish Verma, a B Tech CSE 2nd semester student, made a poster “Importance of mathematics” via which she discussed the use of various mathematical tools used in our daily life with the help of some real-life examples which helped students to understand the importance and the fun side of mathematics.

Another B Tech student Simran in her poster “The elements of mathematics” talked about the various geometrical shapes and the world being a combination of various shapes.

Further, “Math is Everywhere” poster made by Simarjot of B Tech 2nd semester explained various formulas of math depicted by a Watch. She discussed the importance of math in managing time and correlated the process of finding solutions for math problems to the solutions of problems in real life. She emphasised on the fact that just like math problems there is a solution to every problem of life as well, we just need a little patience and persistence to find it.

Finally, Dr. Rajesh Bagga, Director of AIMETC, motivated students to believe in their potential and acquire essential skills to make Mathematics a strong subject. Math is a necessity, it can help them succeed professionally, emotionally, and cognitively.

The sessions were coordinated by faculty including Dr. Sheenu Nayyar, Assistant Professor SE, Dr. Avnip Deora, Dean School of Engineering & Technology, Mr. Rajiv Kumar, HOD, School of Information Technology  and Dr. Amarjeet Kaur, HOD.
