The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has slated the Chemistry exam for February 27, 2024. Students must have already completed their initial round of prep for the exam. However, studying the chapters needs to be complemented by solving several question papers to ensure one is exam-ready.

To make it easier for students, Suman Chaudhary, a Chemistry teacher at Apeejay School Faridabad, Sector 15, shared some important tips not just for what to do a day before the exam but also how to attempt the question paper on the final day of the exam.

“I always tell my students to stay away from rote learning. It is necessary to understand the concepts. Once you have a grasp of this, students can answer any question based on it. At the same time it is important to remember the formulae and theories to name a few,” Chaudhary said and shared what students must do a day before the exam.

1.       Review Key chapters and concepts: Prioritise key chapters based on weightage in marks and review their key concepts, formulas, equations, and theories. Focus on understanding the fundamental principles rather than trying to memorise everything.

2.       Practice numericals: Consistent practice of numericals is required. Dedicate your time to solve a variety of problems.

3.       Quick revision notes: To remember all formulas and name reactions; students must note down them in one place with examples. This will also help in quick revision during exam timing.

4.       Emulate exam conditions: This will build your speed, accuracy, and confidence. Visualise yourself completing the exam with confidence and clarity. Positive visualisation can help reduce anxiety and boost your self-confidence.

6.       Get plenty of rest: Aim to get at least seven to eight hours of quality sleep the night before the exam. A well-rested mind will help you stay focused and perform better during the exam. Keep a positive mindset and try to stay calm and relaxed. Practice deep breathing exercises or mindfulness techniques to manage exam-related stress and anxiety.

She also said that even the most brilliant students must have a strategy in place about how to attempt the question paper on the day of the exam and shared several tips to keep in mind.

10 things to keep in mind while attempting the question paper on the day of the exam

1.       Use the first 15 minutes effectively: You get a good 15 minutes in the beginning to read the question paper — use this time to do just that — READ. Read all the 33 questions in 15 minutes.

2.       Read instructions carefully: Before you begin answering any questions, read the instructions provided on the question paper thoroughly. When writing the answers, you first need to understand what is being asked and how many marks it contains. The answer should be written accordingly- logically and comprehensively.

3.       Manage your time wisely: Allocate your time effectively for each section or question based on the marks allotted and your confidence level in the topics. Avoid spending too much time on any single question and aim to complete the entire paper within the given time frame.

4.       Select your options wisely: Read multiple-choice questions (MCQs) carefully and make your choice smartly.

5.       Start with confidence: Begin by attempting questions that you are most confident about. This can help build momentum and boost your confidence for tackling more challenging questions later on.

6.       Read each question carefully: Read the question properly and the marks allocated to each part and sub-parts of the question. Pay attention to keywords that indicate what is expected in your response. Before you start writing, take a moment to outline your response or jot down key points. Planning your answers can help you structure your thoughts coherently and ensure that you address all aspects of the question.

7.       Show your work: Clearly show your calculations, reasoning, and steps involved in solving numerical or problem-solving questions. Even if your final answer is incorrect, you may still earn partial credit for demonstrating your understanding of the concepts.

8.       Answer all parts of the question: Make sure to address all parts of the question comprehensively. Check that you have answered each sub-question or requirement to the best of your ability. Explain lengthy answers with examples and diagrams. Always draw diagrams with a pencil with proper labeling in block letters. Recheck for all logic and calculations. Underline the keywords of the answers. Draw a line after each answer to indicate the end of that answer and the beginning of new answers.

9.       Use clear and concise language: Write your answers in clear and concise language based on scientific temperament. If you encounter a challenging question, take a deep breath, and approach it methodically. Remember to stay positive and do your best until the very end.

10.   Review your work:

If time permits, take a few minutes at the end to review your answers and make any necessary corrections or improvements. Check for errors, missing information, or any overlooked questions.

“By keeping these points in mind, you can approach the question paper with confidence and maximise your chances of success on the day of the exam,” Chaudhary said in conclusion.
