Research in architecture is paramount for innovation and progress. It serves as the foundation for informed design decisions, enabling architects to integrate cutting-edge technologies, sustainable practices, and cultural insights. Through research, architects gain a deeper understanding of societal needs, ensuring their creations are not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional, sustainable, and relevant.

Thus, with an aim to bridge the gap between research and architecture while focusing on refining the essential skill of defining the search, Apeejay Institute of Technology – School of Architecture & Planning (AIT-SAP), Greater Noida, recently conducted the Faculty Workshop on the ‘Craft of Research’.

The key resource person for this workshop was Prof. Ar. Rashmi Tandon, an accomplished Architect, Urban-Regional Planner, and Professor at the College of Architecture, VastuKala Academy, New Delhi.

The session began with an inspiring and motivational address by Prof. Ar. Rashmi Tandon, recapping the enlightening workshop’s key aspects. The workshop delved into the pivotal role of active engagement in the research process, emphasizing hands-on exercises to enhance research skills.

A fundamental question addressed during the session was ‘Why do research?’ Ar. Tandon illustrated the societal contributions of research, spanning economic, environmental, cultural, and health aspects. The exploration of potential research themes provided insightful perspectives, showcasing the diverse variables across disciplines that can form the basis for research inquiries.

Further, the speaker emphasised the concept of researching via architecture, highlighting that architecture is not merely a subject of study but a tool for exploration and understanding. This perspective broadens the scope of research within the architectural realm.

The workshop further outlined the characteristics and types of research, emphasising the transformation of qualitative data into quantitative data for meaningful analysis. Participants  were guided on the significance of converting data formats and utilising tools like X-mind map and Mentee-meter for effective mind mapping exercises. Ar. Tandon introduced the NVIVO software, facilitating content analysis, vent diagrams, flow diagrams, and bubble diagrams, enhancing the quality and depth of research.

All in all, Ar. Rashmi Tandon’s workshop on the Craft of Research provided invaluable insights into the world of architectural research. Faculties gained a deeper understanding of the intricate relationship between research and architecture, equipped with practical skills and tools to embark on meaningful research endeavours.
