In simple terms, Triple Talaq is a form of marriage dissolution in Muslim Law, whereby a husband can give the divorce to his wife by stating Talaq three times in one row. The presence of a wife is not required, she can be given Talaq without assigning valid reason. The term “Talaq” refers to the repudiation of marriage by husband under Muslim law. The practice of triple Talaq has been prevailing since ancient times in India.

This has ruined the lives of many Muslim women because men can end marriages simply by saying ‘talaq’ three times.

Thus, to discuss the repercussions of this law, law students of Apeejay Stya University (ASU) , Gurugram recently attended an online session  on “The Journey of Triple Talaq in a Globalizing World”. The session was conducted by Ms. Kirti Kaliraman, Legal Advisor, NCA Candidate & International Trained Lawyer.

In her address, she notably appreciated the recent developments made by the hon’ble Supreme Court of India to curb the menace of “Triple Talaq” as a mode of dissolution of Muslim marriage.

Further, she narrated the judicial developments starting from the well-known Shah Bano Begum Case and explained the other landmark judgements till date during her lecture. She also deciphered the holy texts written in the holy books as a source of customary law. She has supported the protection of the rights of women, children and elderly for education, health, care in every society.

Subsequently, she embarked upon the dire need of transformation of all societies on the principles as guided through various notable judgements by the hon’ble Supreme Court of India time to time.

Finally, the virtual session concluded with a Q&A round and valuable feedback was received from the students.
