She is a Class IX student at Apeejay School, Kharghar, and a sports lover. She enjoys playing football, skating, badminton, and many other sports. Skating has been an important part of her life because it has taught her valuable lessons. She plans to pursue engineering. Meet Madiha Shaikh, who recently won the Gold in U-17 in skating.

In an impromptu interview, she shares that she has been skating for over four years and participated in over five competitions.

How did you develop an interest in skating?

In my society, many of my friends used to skate. I would watch them and feel excited to try it myself. What began as a simple activity slowly turned into a passion. I realised how much I enjoyed learning new skills and challenging myself.

How did you feel when you won the U-17 Gold medal?

It was an emotional moment for me. All the hard work, practice sessions, and sacrifices felt completely worth it. I felt especially grateful to my parents for supporting me. This medal was special. I had practised extremely hard this time, so it meant more to me.

What is the difference between inline and quad skates?

Inline skates have wheels arranged in a single straight line, which makes them faster and more suitable for racing. However, they are harder to balance on, especially for beginners. Quad skates have two wheels in the front and two at the back, which provide more stability and balance. They are often used by beginners or for artistic skating. I started with quad skates and later shifted to inline skates.

What does a typical day look like for you?

On a typical day, I attend school and complete my homework first. After finishing my studies, I go for skating practice. During practice, I focus on technique, speed, and balance. Managing school and sports can be challenging, but I handle it through discipline and proper time management.

What is the most challenging move in inline skating?

Sharp turns are important in races. They can decide whether you win or lose. A strong start is also crucial because it helps you gain an early advantage. I have worked hard to improve both.

Who has been your biggest supporter?

My father has been my biggest supporter. He motivates me to participate in competitions and always stands by me, whether I win or lose. After every competition, he discusses my strengths and areas where I can improve.

What has skating taught you?

Skating has taught me patience, consistency, and perseverance. I have faced injuries, fatigue, and the challenge of balancing school with practice. These experiences taught me never to give up, even when things get difficult.

What advice would you give to other students?

I would advise students to stay consistent, be patient, and enjoy the process. Failures are a part of success, so it’s important to learn from them. Success does not come overnight — it requires discipline, belief in yourself, and regular practice.
