Akhansha Bhowmik is a Television and Radio Journalism student at Apeejay Institute of Mass Communication (AIMC). Alongside her journalistic pursuits, she is also a talented poet whose recent poem, True Hue, highlights her sensitive heart and the warmth of an artist’s soul. Selected as this week’s Apeejay Promising Poet, she shares how poetry enlivens her world and talks about her writing process.
At what age did you start writing poetry?
I began writing poetry at the age of 16.
What inspires you to write poems?
Moments of solitude and deep conversations with myself often spark the inspiration I need for poetry.
Wow, that’s a deep answer! So tell us the thought behind your poem “True Hue.”
The poem “True Hue” celebrates diversity. It was inspired by a group assignment that made me reflect on the beauty in all shades of humanity. I feel there is inherent beauty in everyone and everything. We have to feel it at the level of the soul.
Who is your favorite poet, and what is your favorite poem?
My favourite poet is Maya Angelou, and my favorite poem is “Still I Rise.” As we all know about this much celebrated poem, it has inspired millions and I am glad to also be touched by its beauty.
Our most clichéd but fun question: Rhyme or free verse?
Mostly free verse. It gives me the creative freedom to just write.
And what is your preferred time to write?
At night. It’s very quiet and reflective. I enjoy that stillness.
Finally, how does AIMC encourage you?
