Anjana Suresh, a class V student from Apeejay Svran Global School, showcased her determination, hard work, and discipline at the 4th Haryana State Finswimming Championship. The event, organised by the Underwater Sports Association of Haryana, took place on June 2 at Modern School, Sector 17, Faridabad. This young athlete’s exceptional performance saw her out swim all her competitors, earning her the prestigious Individual Championship Best Swimmer Trophy.

In a candid conversation, this natator shares her practice andragogy and her ultimate holy grail.

How was the experience at the recent swimming championship?

It was a good experience. It was a different competition where I had to swim with a snorkel and fins and we were supposed to breathe inside the water through it.

Were you prepared well?

Yes, I was prepared well. Our academy prepares us well for such competitions.

What’s your training regime like?

I go for training twice a day and seven days in a week. The training becomes hard before our competitions. Our coach decides the training schedule. For example, a training schedule could be: Warm-ups 500 metres, 5X 50 metres kick drills; 5X50 metres pull drills. The main set was 3 X 200 metres and 8X 100 metres followed by a cool down of 100 metres.

How do you balance studies with swimming training?

I get a few hours to study. My training starts at 4:30 am. I reach school directly from the training. I stay back after school to complete my homework and revision.

What are your goals and aspirations in life?

I want to get into the Army and serve my country.

How did Apeejay support your love for swimming?

My school teachers have always encouraged me. The most overwhelming moment is when I receive praise during the assembly sessions in front of the whole school.

Are your parents supportive of your love for swimming?

Yes, they are like my rock who have my constant source of motivation and meet all ends to make sure I can pursue and hone my skills in the swimming manifold.

How has swimming changed your personality and growth?

One thing that I have imbibed from this sport is that I’m not afraid of competitions anymore and can face any challenge any time

Any special diet you follow as a swimmer?

I take carbohydrates and a protein-rich diet to maintain my strength and agility at all times. I also stay away from junk food and am allowed a cheat meal once a month.

Who is your inspiration behind swimming?

Katie Ledecki, an American swimmer who has won seven Olympic gold medals and 21 world championship gold medals.

Do you feel swimming has a great future in India?

No. There are no good swimming pools near our home. We have to travel 15 kkm(one side) daily to the pool. The government does not support swimming and there are no recognitions or support available for swimmers.
