Most students would think that simplifying biology would mean oversimplifying or diluting the subject matter. Instead, it involves breaking down complex concepts into manageable parts, allowing students to grasp the underlying principles. This promotes critical thinking skills as students learn to analyse, evaluate, and apply their knowledge to solve problems.

When biology is made accessible and understandable, it sparks students’ interest and enthusiasm for the subject. By presenting concepts in an easy-to-understand manner, teachers can engage students and motivate them to explore the fascinating world of biology.

Neetu Bhardwaj, a Biology teacher at Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg in Jalandhar said that she makes her subject interesting by planning the lessons properly using different types of pedagogies for different topics in the chapter. “For example I use collaborative, demonstrative, inquiry-based learning, experiential, reflective, child-centric, jovial learning-gamification, and storytelling,” Bhardwaj shared.

She also uses creative learning-project based/research based learning as well. “At times, I play science charades with students from the topics taught to check their learning out comes; worksheets with competency based questions are prepared to evoke their interest in the subject by increasing the difficulty level. Different types of activities are performed to develop diverse skills in them. Opportunities are given to students so that they apply their knowledge to different situations and at times create things at their level,” Bhardwaj said and added that this makes it easy for the students to understand the topics and the subject better.

  1. Understand the syllabus: Familiarise yourself with the biology syllabus prescribed by the Board or university. It will help you identify the key topics and prioritise your studies accordingly.
  2. Break it down: Biology covers a wide range of topics. Break down the subject into smaller, manageable chunks. Focus on one topic at a time and ensure you understand it before moving on to the next.
  3. Create a study schedule: Plan a study schedule that allocates specific time slots for biology. Consistency is key, so set aside regular study periods. Be realistic with your goals and ensure you have dedicated study time for each topic.
  4. Practice with questions: Biology involves a lot of memorisation and understanding concepts. Practice with a variety of questions, including multiple-choice, short answer, and essay questions. Solve previous years’ question papers or use study guides and practice books to reinforce your knowledge and prepare for exams.
  5. Seek clarification: If you come across difficult or confusing topics, don’t hesitate to seek clarification. Consult your biology teacher or join study groups where you can discuss and learn from others. Online forums and educational websites can also provide valuable explanations and discussions.

Bhardwaj said that it is very important for students to get their doubts cleared before they tackle the next topic.

“It is also important for the students to think critically on the concepts being taught and try to understand them not to memorise. Third, learn individual concepts before integrating them together. Four, students should use active study methods and test themselves frequently to truly gauge how much they have comprehended. Finally, work on areas which need improvement,” Bhardwaj asserted.
