“Patriotism is your conviction that this country is superior to all others because you were born in it.” – George Bernard Shaw

Patriotism is a sentiment that reflects the love and devotion of citizens toward their country. The genuine essence of patriotism entails fulfilling duties and expressing self-respect for the nation. The nation does not belong solely to one individual; rather, it is a collective possession that we must collaboratively nurture and develop.

Countless individuals sacrificed their lives to grant our country its present existence. How can we forget their sacrifices? Notable figures like Rani Lakshmi Bai, Mahatma Gandhi, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, and Sukhdev were among the many courageous freedom fighters. Even today, numerous martyrs lay down their lives on the borders, demonstrating unwavering devotion to the nation. They safeguard our borders, protecting the honour of our country day and night. Commemorating the struggles for freedom and the bravery of these individuals remains an integral aspect of patriotism.

An independent nation bestows upon us a sense of identity. This nation belongs to each one of us, and it is our collective responsibility to contribute to its progress and advancement. “Unity is strength.” Through collaboration and teamwork, remarkable accomplishments can be achieved. By working together, we can enhance our education system, healthcare, infrastructure, and overall economic development.

“Small changes can make a big difference.” This quote underscores the importance of making minor efforts to demonstrate love and devotion for our country, fostering patriotism in every action and decision we make.

Voting is a crucial facet of patriotism. Every adult, regardless of their social background, religion, race, caste, or gender, has the right to vote for their representatives. Citizens elect leaders to voice their concerns and ideas, and in turn, these leaders advocate for the interests of the citizens. This democratic process ensures wise decision-making and minimises disputes. During the COVID-19 pandemic, adhering to safety measures like wearing face masks and practicing social distancing has been a simple yet impactful way to support our country collectively. Additionally, maintaining cleanliness in our surroundings and preserving the environment for future generations are vital aspects of patriotism.

The youth are often referred to as the future of our country. As future leaders, they will elevate the reputation of our nation. Over time, our country continues to modernise and progress at a rapid pace, driven by the ideas and innovations of the youth. The youth can embody patriotism on a daily basis by being responsible citizens, showing respect to others, and acknowledging the contributions of the nation. It is our duty to reciprocate the benefits we receive from our country.

“Do you love your country?

Then come, let us struggle for higher and better things.

Look not back, no, not even if

You see the dearest and nearest cry.

Look not back, but forward!”

-Swami Vivekananda
