National Cancer Awareness Day, observed annually on November 7, stands as a poignant reminder of the collective battle against one of the most formidable adversaries of our time. This day serves as a beacon of hope, illuminating the path towards early detection, prevention, and treatment of cancer.

It is a day of reflection, education, and action, drawing attention to the staggering impact of this disease on lives worldwide. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 70 per cent of cancer-related fatalities occur in low and middle-income nations, underscoring the urgent need for widespread awareness and access to quality healthcare. Lifestyle factors, such as smoking, obesity, alcohol consumption, and inadequate nutrition, contribute to nearly one-third of all cancer-related deaths.

Therefore, National Cancer Awareness Day pays tribute to the resilience of survivours, honours the legacy of pioneers in oncology like Marie Curie, and mobilises communities to stand united in the fight against cancer.

In a bid to raise awareness about the critical issue, Apeejay School, Model Town in Jalandhar played host to an enlightening seminar. The event aimed to educate attendees on various aspects of cancer, emphasising the importance of early detection and the role of lifestyle modifications.

The choice of November 7 holds special significance, as it coincides with the birthday of the illustrious Marie Curie, whose groundbreaking research in radioactivity paved the way for advancements in cancer treatment.

At the seminar, Dr Archana Dutta, a distinguished Senior Consultant Oncologist with extensive experience dating back to 2004, delivered a comprehensive lecture. Dr Dutta’s training at esteemed institutes including the Cancer Institute Chennai, AIIMS Delhi, and Burnby Hospital in Vancouver, Canada, lends her a unique perspective in the field of Oncology.

Joining the event as a special guest was Mrs Amrit Sarna, a valiant cancer survivour, devoted mother, and esteemed parent. Dr Dutta enlightened the audience on the various factors that can lead to cancer, encouraging active engagement from the students.

Addressing the gathering, the Principal, Mr Malkiat Singh, noted the importance of adopting a simple and holistic lifestyle to prevent the onset of this formidable disease.

To instill compassion and awareness among the younger generation, a creative card-making activity was held for students in classes IV and V. These heartfelt cards will be distributed to hospitals and cherished by cancer survivors, serving as tokens of hope and support.

In a touching symbolic gesture, the Kindergarten students of Rhythms Kinderworld School, Jalandhar released balloons into the sky, signifying unity in the fight against cancer and commemorating this significant day. The event left a lasting impression on all in attendance, underscoring the collective commitment to battling this pervasive health challenge.
