Recently, Apeejay School, Model Town, Jalandhar, organised an engaging artefacts-making activity for students of Class VII as part of the British Council project, Global Narratives: Shared Roots, Diverse Voices. The activity provided a vibrant platform for young learners to explore traditional art forms, celebrate cultural diversity and understand the significance of artistic expressions in preserving heritage.

The initiative aimed to foster creativity, curiosity and cultural awareness among students through experiential learning. With great enthusiasm and imagination, the students participated in creating a variety of artefacts, including hand fans, masks, decorated pots and tie-and-dye artworks. Each creation reflected their artistic abilities, thoughtful engagement and appreciation for the diverse traditions practised across communities.

The hands-on activity encouraged students to experiment with different materials, colours, patterns and techniques. While designing their artefacts, they explored how traditional crafts serve as a reflection of a community’s identity, history and way of life. The process also helped them recognise the importance of preserving indigenous art forms and respecting the cultural practices of people from different backgrounds.

Beyond artistic expression, the activity promoted essential skills such as observation, imagination, problem-solving and attention to detail. Working on their creations allowed students to learn through exploration and develop a deeper understanding of how art can communicate stories, beliefs and shared experiences across generations.

The colourful artefacts showcased the students’ creativity and enthusiasm, bringing the theme Shared Roots, Diverse Voices’to life. The activity reinforced the idea that while cultures may differ in their traditions and artistic practices, they are often connected by common human experiences, values and aspirations.

Through this initiative, the school, continued to encourage holistic learning by integrating creativity and cultural exploration into the educational experience. The activity helped students develop a broader global perspective, nurturing respect for diversity and an appreciation of the rich cultural heritage that connects people across the world.
