A strong foundation in school can shape not just academic growth but life choices as well. An alumna, Sneha Padmachandran of Apeejay School, Noida, after completing her schooling, pursued BCom (H) and chose teaching as her profession. In this candid interview, she shares how her experiences and teachers influenced her decision to enter the field of education.
Which teachers or experiences at the school influenced your decision to become a teacher?
There were several teachers over the years who played an important role in shaping my decision. Their dedication, warmth, and way of engaging with students left a strong impression on me.
When did you first realise you wanted to pursue teaching?
The thought became clearer after I got married to a Defence Officer. With a life that involved frequent moves, teaching felt like a profession that could align with that lifestyle while still allowing me to stay connected to learning and growth.
How did your time at school shape the values or skills you use as a teacher today?
My school years were deeply enriching. We had excellent facilities and teachers who were always approachable. They encouraged me consistently and guided me towards my goals. That sense of support and encouragement is something I try to carry into my own classroom.
Are there any school memories that still influence the way you teach?
What stays with me is how accessible and kind my teachers were. They created an environment where asking questions felt natural. That memory shapes how I interact with my students today.
How do you see the role of a teacher in shaping young minds today?
Teachers play a central role in a student’s life. Beyond academics, they act as mentors and role models. They help develop critical thinking and also support emotional growth, which is just as important.

In your view, what qualities make a teacher truly impactful?
A good teacher is empathetic, understanding, and approachable. Clear communication matters. Flexibility is important because every student learns differently. A teacher should stay updated in their subject and remain open to learning at all times.
Why should young people consider teaching as a profession today?
Teaching offers a strong sense of personal satisfaction. You see the impact of your work in the growth of your students. It also encourages continuous learning and personal development, which keeps the profession meaningful over time.
