Recently, Apeejay School, Pitampura, organised an international video conference on Biodiversity: A Shared Responsibility. It brought together students from the school and Indonesia for an engaging exchange of ideas on environmental conservation. The interaction provided a valuable platform for students to share perspectives, learn about diverse ecosystems and understand the importance of preserving biodiversity for future generations.
The discussion centred on four key themes: the significance of biodiversity, its presence in students’ local communities, the threats it faces, and the role individuals can play in its conservation. Through thoughtful discussions, students explored how the wide variety of plants, animals and other living organisms sustains ecological balance and supports life on Earth.
Sharing observations from their respective surroundings, students highlighted examples of biodiversity, including trees, garden plants, birds, insects, and local wildlife. The exchange enabled them to appreciate the unique natural environments of their communities while recognising the environmental challenges they collectively face. Issues such as pollution, deforestation, habitat destruction, rapid urbanisation and climate change emerged as significant threats to biodiversity.

The interaction also encouraged students to reflect on practical and sustainable measures to protect the natural world. They discussed the importance of planting and nurturing native trees, reducing plastic consumption, conserving water, maintaining clean surroundings and protecting natural habitats. Students also emphasised the need to spread environmental awareness and adopt responsible habits in their everyday lives.
Beyond environmental learning, the video conference fostered cross-cultural understanding and international collaboration. Listening to their Indonesian peers offered students an opportunity to discover different perspectives, appreciate local conservation practices and recognise that environmental protection transcends geographical boundaries.
The session reinforced the idea that biodiversity is a shared natural heritage that demands collective responsibility and sustained action. It encouraged students to look beyond individual communities and recognise their role as responsible global citizens.
The video conference proved to be an enriching educational experience, inspiring students to become more conscious of their environmental responsibilities and take meaningful steps towards safeguarding the planet. It reiterated that every individual, regardless of age or location, can contribute to preserving biodiversity and building a more sustainable future.
