Badminton, a sport cherished by many, holds a significant place alongside beloved games such as cricket and football. This racket sport has surged in popularity across India, a trend largely attributed to the stellar performances and international successes of players like Saina Nehwal and Kidambi Srikanth. Their remarkable achievements have not only brought them widespread acclaim but have also served as a beacon of inspiration for countless young enthusiasts dreaming of carving out their own path in the realm of badminton.

This wave of enthusiasm for badminton is evident in the growing number of students who are now embracing the sport, viewing it as a viable career option. Among these aspiring athletes is Arav Negi, a bright and dedicated class VI student from Apeejay School, Saket. Arav has already made a mark by clinching the title at the Junior Badminton Championship, showcasing his skill and determination. His victory is not just a personal achievement but a testament to the potential and passion that young players like him bring to the sport. With his sights firmly set on the nationals, Arav is poised to make an even more significant impact, embodying the spirit of perseverance and excellence that badminton champions before him have displayed.

Excerpts from the interview:

Who inspired you to take up this sport?

Inspired by my brother’s daily and professional engagement in badminton, I felt motivated to take up the sport myself, and here I am going ahead with the same, all dedicatedly and enthusiastically.

Who has been your role model?

My role model is Miss Madhumeeta ma’am, who also happens to be my coach. Her guidance and exemplary skills in the field have been a constant source of inspiration for me. Notably, a few years back, I had the extraordinary chance to feature in a TV commercial alongside P.V Sindhu, an experience for which I am immensely grateful.

Give insights about your winning strategy.

Playing with the powerful combination of smashes and strategic rallies has proven to be my effective approach to overcoming opponents on the badminton court.

Why is dedication and discipline important while playing badminton?

Maintaining discipline is crucial. I make it a routine to get up early each morning, attend the academy, ensure timely meals, and consequently, adhere to a consistent sleep schedule.

What is your training regimen?

My daily routine involves early morning academy sessions followed by school. Upon returning, I take a short nap before heading for evening practice. Afterward, I allocate dedicated hours for my studies.

Do you want to make this your profession or are you playing just as a hobby?

I give my dedicated hours to play badminton. I am exploring opportunities and prospects for my career in this field.

Have you ever faced any challenges in your sports journey?

Achieving a spot in the Delhi Nationals for the Under-13 category was initially a challenge for me. However, through consistent and rigorous practice, I have successfully secured my position and am actively participating in the event.

How do you manage your studies and sports together?

As mentioned earlier, I prioritise providing adequate rest to my body after rigorous practice, recognising its importance. Subsequently, I allocate dedicated time for my studies, ensuring a minimum of two hours of focused academic commitment each day.

Advice for an upcoming athletes.

It is very important to maintain discipline, prioritise punctuality, and approach the game with proper concentration during play.
