This minstrel’s life revolves around the saying – that music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life. Meet Swarnim Prabhat, studying in class VIII at Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park. In a candid interview, Swarnim can’t stop raving about how through his hard work and determination, he aced the district-level championship.

Read edited excerpts here.

How do you feel after winning the district championship?

I feel incredibly proud and happy to have won third place in the Classical Swar Junior Category at the district level. It’s a great honour; I’m thankful for the support of my teachers and the opportunity to showcase my skills. This experience has motivated me to continue improving and reaching even higher goals. I also hope to make my teachers and parents proud of me.

How did you prepare for it?

First of all, the composition and the raag were the same as per zonal competition. My preparation involved a lot of guidance from my teachers. I worked closely to perfect my technique. I practised regularly to ensure that I was fully prepared. I focused on the nuances of the raag I performed and also worked on maintaining a strong mental focus to stay composed during the competition.

What did you perform at the championship?

At the championship, I performed Raag Yaman Kalyan on the harmonium which was taught to me by my music guru, accompanied by my teacher on the tabla. The same way as per the zonal, it was a performance that required a deep understanding of the raag’s structure and emotions, and I think I was able to express that with the help of my teachers.

How has Apeejay supported your musical journey?

My school has been instrumental in supporting my musical journey by providing constant encouragement and the resources necessary for growth. The school’s commitment to fostering student talent has allowed me to delve deeper into music while effectively managing my academic pursuits.

How has music changed your life personally?

Music has added structure and focus to my life, while also boosting my confidence, particularly during performances. On a personal level, it serves as a powerful stress reliever and provides a way for me to express emotions and thoughts that words alone can’t convey.

What does music mean to you?

Music is my sanctuary and a powerful outlet for self-expression. It brings me peace and joy. It helps me to connect with my emotions on a deeper level. While my academic focus is on Science, music provides the balance and creativity that enriches my life.
