Pedaling through memories: My journey with cycling

“Bicycles may change, but cycling is timeless.” This quote has resonated with me ever since my first experience of riding a bicycle at the age of 5. It remains among my most vivid memories, symbolising the joys of childhood and the thrill of conquering fears. Little did I realise that this simple machine would bring about a significant change in my life. From that moment, I embarked on a quest for perfection, striving day in and day out in this meaningful pursuit.

With every ride, I felt an overwhelming sense of freedom. It was the freedom to move, to be outdoors, and to connect with people. Cycling became a medium for establishing new relationships across different age groups, cultures, and mindsets. In a world where sports activities have gained widespread popularity, cycling has found its place, enriching both physical endurance and life itself. The simple act of cycling has the power to make us feel stronger, more confident, and ultimately happier.

One individual who embodies the benefits of cycling is Ms. Maninder Kaur, our Social Science educator at Apeejay School, Model Town. Her dedication to cycling has not only helped her maintain exceptional fitness, but has also inspired countless individuals, including myself. The privilege of being an active participant in Cyclothon events, under Ma’am’s guidance, filled me with immeasurable joy. It was during these events that I interacted with enthusiastic participants from various age groups, boosting my confidence and motivating me to aim higher.

Participating in Cyclothon events provided me with memorable experiences, including the opportunity to meet national and international champions like Surinder Singh Sodhi (gold medalist hockey player) and Meena Kumari (international weightlifter). These events were expertly hosted by RJ Reet, who captured the essence of the occasion. Cycling alongside fellow participants in the early morning created a strong sense of camaraderie, fostered by our matching T-shirts, medals, and appreciation certificates. These shared elements promoted a feeling of unity and belonging.

The impact of participating in Cyclothon events extended to my daily routine as well. I now start my mornings with cycling, rain or shine. I’ve developed a deep passion for cycling and am proud to be a part of the Junior Hawk Riders cycling group. My enthusiasm for cycling led me to acquire a new bicycle, symbolising my commitment to this journey. I owe a debt of gratitude to our respected teacher, whose guidance and motivation have made all of this possible.

As I eagerly await more opportunities in the future, I am reminded that the essence of cycling remains unchanged—the thrill of the ride, the sense of freedom, and the camaraderie it fosters among enthusiasts. “Get a bicycle” has transformed from a mere statement to a way of life, an invitation to explore, connect, and embrace the timeless joy of cycling.
