The Human Resource (HR) department of Apeejay School of Management (ASM), Dwarka, organised a special guest lecture on the theme of managerial leadership skills this month for its students. The event was conceptualised in line with Apeejay’s mission of exposing learners to international best practices and learnings during their two years at the institute.

The lecture, titled, “Do Great Leaders Make Good Managers? Exploring the Concept of Managerial Leadership” was conducted by Dr Anil Behal, senior chief executive officer, ORGDYNE Training & Consulting, LLC, Pennsylvania, US.

Dr Behal, who has had a successful career spanning three decades with several Fortune 500 companies, started the discussion by exploring myths associated with managerial leadership. He highlighted people’s undying desire to hold a leadership position. However, leadership cannot exist in a vacuum, he said, but entails serious managerial responsibilities in a corporate set-up.

Important leadership skills include relationship building, agility and adaptability, employee motivation, conflict management, critical thinking, problem solving, decision making, and negotiation, to name a few. A managerial leader must know how to delegate, organise, coordinate and more importantly empower employees to achieve goals and objectives.

The interactive session was enjoyed by all the students, who also shared their experiences and learnings with the resource person. They talked about how ASM groomed them for leadership positions.

The webinar was moderated by Dr Ishita Adhikari, area chair-HR and head-Corporate Resource Centre, ASM. “Able leaders are a prerequisite for success of any organisation in an ever-changing and disruptive global environment. It is essential to nurture leadership competence in our students,” she said.

Earlier, ASM also organised another international webinar on expatriate training by Professor (Dr) Parth Patel, lecturer (Management) & Academic Lead for Higher Degree Research (HDR) Peer Mentoring at the Australian Institute of Business, Adelaide, Australia.
