In simple words, cyberstalking can be defined as a crime committed by someone who stalks others using the internet or another electronic device. The terms “cyberstalking” and “online abuse” are interchangeable. It involves persistently intimidating or threatening an individual. In fact, cyber stalkers can keep a check on the activities of their victim without their identity being known to the world.

Thus, to familiarise budding lawyers with the menace of cyberstalking in India and different landmark judgements passed on this, The School of Legal Studies (SLS) at Apeejay Stya University (ASU), Gurugram recently organised an online session on  “Cyberstalking Against Women in India”. The session was delivered by Dr. Sakshi Dudeja, faculty at SLS.

In her address, she has notably appreciated the recent developments made by the hon’ble Supreme Court of India to curb the menace of cyberstalking by bringing in several landmark judgements.

Further, she narrated the judicial developments starting from the well-known Ritu Kohli Case and explained the other landmark judgements till date during her lecture. She also deciphered the aims and objectives of IT Act 2000 and the amendments thereafter. She has supported the protection of the rights of women in the Cyberspace. “There is a dire need of protection of all societies on the principles as guided through various notable judgements by the hon’ble Supreme Court of India time to time and to make the Cyberspace a safe as well as secure space for all,” she said.
