There is a timeless adage: ‘We remember what we choose to recall.’
Undoubtedly, the world serves as a grand stage, and we retain what deeply resonates with us. This sentiment finds a parallel in the enduring legacy of Diego Armando Maradona, affectionately known as ‘The God of Football,’ albeit with a touch of unapologetic bias.
Whether you’re a devoted fan or a casual observer, it’s impossible to deny the magnetic charisma that Pibe de Oro, ‘The Golden Boy,’ exuded on the pitch. His indelible mark, akin to that of a mad genius, is a testament not just to his ability to find ingenious solutions in tight spaces but also to conjure creative, logic-defying plays that showcased his extraordinary talent.
Many may argue that Maradona’s tumultuous encounters with substance abuse and a plethora of controversies disqualify him as a role model in the realm of sports. Nonetheless, there remains an invaluable lesson to draw from his life — a wellspring of motivation rooted in the passionate transformation of a poverty-stricken boy from Villa Fiorito into an everlasting World Champion.

Let us unveil five magical moments from Maradona, alongside his remarkable saga of adventures.
A true leader who consistently delivered!
Before 1986, the perennial fan favourites at every World Cup included the likes of Germany, Brazil, Italy, and France. Maradona, however, elevated Argentina to a prominent position in the world of football. Almost single-handedly, he propelled a team devoid of other stars to claim the coveted title of World Champions in 1986. With goals that left the world awestruck, assists that compelled even rival players to applaud, and a spirit that galvanised his teammates into a formidable force, Diego Maradona epitomised the essence of a true captain.”
The Goal of the Century: A Manifestation of Imagination, Inspiration, and Self-Belief
Perhaps, in the realm of unrealistic movie scripts enhanced with dazzling visual effects, we could envision the lead character weaving past six opponents from his own half to score a breathtaking goal. However, our man achieved this extraordinary feat in reality!

To this day, no one has replicated such a moment in a World Cup match. If you harbor any doubts, cast your gaze upon Maradona’s goal against the star-studded England squad during the heated 1986 World Cup quarter-final clash, set against the backdrop of the Falkland War. Maradona’s journey with the ball from his own half, eluding English defenders, is not merely a goal; it’s an emotion. Listen to the passionate Spanish commentary, and you’ll understand my intent.
This goal stands as a testament to the power of unwavering will, self-belief, and courage. Enough said — watch it for yourself!
A Touch of Cunning Always Exudes Style

Perhaps what many football connoisseurs assert holds true: Comprehending Maradona is best achieved by revisiting that iconic 1986 World Cup quarter-final clash against England. The first goal, which he famously scored with his hand, deceiving the referee, is forever known as the ‘Hand of God.’ The second goal, as mentioned earlier, is the ‘Goal of the Century.’ Both masterpieces sprang from the same genius.
When a high ball presented a scoring opportunity, everyone, including Maradona himself, knew that a 5-foot-4-inch player could not out-jump the towering Peter Shilton, England’s goalkeeper. So, Diego cleverly used his hand to direct the ball into the net and his head to obscure the handball. The referee fell for the ruse, and Argentina seized the lead.
Years later, in 2005, English football legend Gary Lineker asked Maradona about this sleight of hand on his BBC show. Diego responded, ‘I do not consider this cheating. I’ve scored goals with my hand in Argentina. Yes, it was my hand, but God planted the idea in my mind, and I called it the Hand of God.’
Never Surrender, Even in the Face of Adversity
In the eyes of the world, Maradona may not be deemed a successful manager. He led Argentina in the 2010 World Cup and had two stints in the Middle East, all of which failed to culminate in triumphant campaigns.

However, to truly appreciate his managerial prowess, one need only search for information about Maradona’s tenure with the Mexican second-division team, Dorados de Sinaloa. There, he transformed a group of players into match-winning assets and steered the team to two consecutive championship finals.
Netflix even produced a web series on this remarkable journey. What stood out was how Maradona never grew frustrated with his players; instead, he made them feel accepted and loved, and the results followed on the field like a well-executed algorithm.
The Man Who Fostered Inclusivity
Amidst the controversies surrounding Diego’s life, there exists an anecdote illustrating his commitment to making young players feel part of the team. While it’s well-known how Maradona transformed Napoli, a club in which few believed, into champions of Italy and Europe, fewer know about his advocacy for the rights of many within the club and the city.

Gianfranco Zola, remembered for his time at Chelsea as the ‘Magic Box,’ was a dedicated student of the maestro during their two years together at Napoli. In numerous interviews, he expressed his gratitude to Diego for shaping him into the player the world witnessed at Stamford Bridge. He recounted how they would practice countless free-kicks after training, with Zola closely studying Diego’s ball-curving technique.
In a recent interview, Zola revealed that Maradona once fought with the club to secure tournament-winning bonus money for him and another young player. In a world where people often hesitate to stand up for themselves, Diego jeopardized his relationship with the club to protect the rights of budding players and teammates.
Indeed, a magician and a leader. Let us all remember the World Champion on his special day, learn from his mistakes, and rekindle the inner fire as we immerse ourselves in his greatness!
Feliz Cumple (Happy Birthday), Diego! Continue inspiring us to score goals!
