Playing games that involve physical activities is indeed a part of what we understand as sports, but it’s only partially correct. The true definition of the word ‘sport’ encompasses activities that involve physical exertion and skill, in which individuals or teams compete against one another for entertainment.

Sports aren’t solely about winning and losing; those who participate in sports often derive several benefits, including:

  • The enjoyment of playing the sport.
  • The challenge of competition and personal improvement.
  • Skill development.
  • The exploration of one’s potential.

Sports should primarily be played for enjoyment and physical activity, rather than focusing solely on winning trophies or competitions.

The world boasts a diverse array of sports, each with its unique following and popularity. Some of the most widely followed sports include:

  • Soccer (Football) – with 4 billion fans.
  • Cricket – with 2.5 billion fans.
  • Hockey – with 2 billion fans.
  • Tennis – with 1 billion fans.
  • Volleyball – with 900 million fans.
  • Table Tennis – with 875 million fans.
  • Basketball – with 825 million fans.
  • Rugby – with 475 million fans.

While there are many more sports played around the world, some are played at the national or state level. However, it’s important to differentiate between sports and games that are not considered sports.

For example, the following games should not be classified as sports:

  • Kancha: A childhood game played in India
  • Nondi/Hopscotch: A hopping game, also known as Stapoo, popular for outdoor play
  • Gilli Danda/Lippa
  • Kabaddi
  • Satoliya/Pithoo/Lagori
  • Chain
  • Kho Kho
  • Hide and Seek/Chhupam Chhupai

Even though these games are not classified as sports because they may lack the competitive and organised nature typically associated with sports. However, they are enjoyable recreational games. So what are you waiting for? Pick your favourite sport today!
