National Science Day (NSD) is celebrated every year on 28 February to commemorate the discovery of the ‘Raman Effect’. The government of India designated 28 February as National Science Day (NSD) in 1986. On this day Sir C.V. Raman announced the discovery of the ‘Raman Effect’ for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1930. Raman Effect describes how the wavelength of light scatters when deflected on a particular object. Educational institutions celebrate National Science Day by organising public speeches, radio, TV, science movies, science exhibitions on themes and concepts, debates, quiz competitions, lectures and science model exhibitions.

The purpose of National Science Day is to encourage youth to develop interest in science and understand its importance. This year, the National Science Day 2022 will have ‘Integrated Approach in Science and Technology for Sustainable Future’ as its theme.
