Integrate electoral literacy into curriculum, urges UGC 

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a directive to universities and colleges nationwide, urging them to incorporate voter education and electoral literacy into their academic frameworks. 

UGC called for the development of a robust mechanism to achieve the aspirational objectives outlined by the Election Commission of India (ECI). These goals include providing voter IDs to every eligible student, conducting mock polls, and administering a pledge to vote.

In a letter addressed to Vice Chancellors of all universities and principals of colleges, the UGC highlighted the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Ministry of Education and the Election Commission on November 2, 2023. This MoU aims to formally integrate voter education and electoral literacy into the higher education system, aligning with the SVEEP program to enhance electoral participation among future and new voters.
