Elon Musk, the outspoken CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, recently made waves by sharing an Indian meme amidst Apple’s announcement of a partnership with OpenAI. Apple revealed its collaboration with OpenAI during the Worldwide Developer Conference 2024, highlighting the integration of ChatGPT into its operating systems, promising a seamless user experience across iOS, iPadOS, and macOS with the upcoming iOS 18 software update.

Musk’s response was swift and decisive. He declared that if Apple proceeded with integrating OpenAI into its devices, he would ban Apple products from his companies. Taking to his platform X (formerly Twitter), Musk shared a popular meme from the 2017 Tamil movie ‘Thappattam’. The meme humorously depicted a scenario where Apple shares data with OpenAI, hinting at potential privacy concerns. The image’s caption, “How intelligence works,” added to its comedic effect.

The meme quickly gained traction, garnering millions of views and a plethora of reactions from social media users worldwide. Many hailed Musk’s embrace of the Indian meme culture, while others echoed his concerns about data privacy.

However, Apple swiftly responded to Musk’s criticisms, emphasising that their AI technology prioritizes privacy. They assured users that any integration with OpenAI would be optional, with built-in privacy protections ensuring that user data remains secure. OpenAI reinforced this stance on its website, affirming its commitment to user privacy and data security.

Despite Apple’s reassurances, Musk remained sceptical, labeling the partnership as an “unacceptable security violation.” While Apple and OpenAI emphasise their commitment to privacy, sceptics like Musk continue to question the potential risks associated with such integrations.
