To commemorate National Sports Day, the Sports Club of Apeejay Institute of Management & Engineering Technical Campus (AIMETC), Jalandhar, organised an Inter-College Chess Competition. The event paid tribute to the legendary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand, whose birth anniversary is celebrated across India to honour his unparalleled contribution to sports.

This year, National Sports Day was celebrated with the theme “Sport to Promote Peaceful Societies”, highlighting the role of sports in fostering unity, discipline, and teamwork. Reflecting this spirit, the chess competition became not only a contest of intellect but also a celebration of sportsmanship and camaraderie.

The tournament witnessed enthusiastic participation from students across diverse streams—MBA, MCA, BCA, BBA, B.Com (Hons.), and B.Tech (CSE). The participants demonstrated remarkable concentration, patience, and strategic acumen, making every round an exciting battle of minds. The matches followed a knockout/Swiss system format, where each move revealed intense focus, tactical brilliance, and quick decision-making.

After several keenly contested rounds, the following champions emerged:

  • Boys Category: Mr. Tarandeep Singh (B.Com Hons. V) – Champion; Mr. Jatin Kumar (B.Com Hons. V) – Runner-up.
  • Girls Category: Ms. Kashish (B.Com Hons. I) – Champion; Ms. Nandini Sharma (BCA III) – Runner-up.

The winners received well-deserved applause for their exemplary performance, while all participants were commended for showcasing true sporting spirit.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Rajesh Bagga, Director, AIMETC, congratulated the winners and encouraged students to engage wholeheartedly in sports alongside academics. He emphasised, “Sports must become an integral part of one’s daily routine as they not only ensure physical fitness but also nurture qualities such as team spirit, resilience, and friendship.” Dr. Bagga further reiterated, “Activities like chess sharpen the mind, improve concentration, and foster decision-making abilities, skills that are equally vital for academic and professional success.”

The event was coordinated by Mr. Amanpartap Singh Pall (Convenor) and Dr. Ajwinder Singh (Co-convenor) of the Sports Club, whose dedicated efforts ensured smooth organisation and enthusiastic participation.

In essence, the Inter-College Chess Competition successfully blended the celebration of National Sports Day with the spirit of healthy competition and learning. It stood as a reminder that sports—whether physical or intellectual—are crucial for holistic development, instilling discipline, patience, and the drive to excel.
