Importance of value-based education

Values play a vital role in promoting positive human behaviour. They form the core of educational goals and objectives, guiding learners to embrace caring, cooperation, and respect for others. Education is not only about imparting life skills and attitudes but also preparing individuals for fulfilling lives.

While modern higher education undoubtedly contributes to literacy and knowledge, it has, at times, inadvertently shifted focus away from the essential values required for responsible and compassionate citizenship. This imbalance becomes apparent as values may sometimes get overshadowed by the pursuit of academic achievements. As a result, individuals become educated but lack the essential qualities that make them good human beings and responsible members of society.

In my view, value education should not be treated as a separate subject taught aside regular subjects. Its purpose is not to seek grades rather to cultivate a positive attitude and ethical behaviour within students. By integrating values into all aspects of education, students can better understand their practical applications and internalise them as guiding principles in their lives.

Moreover, value education is not limited to students alone; it is equally important for teachers and staff members. Teachers too must serve as role models to cultivate a strong character and impart values to young learners. By embodying integrity, empathy, and fairness, teachers can effectively guide students towards developing a strong character and embracing positive values.
