Types of Civilizations: Which type are we?

Have you ever wondered that in this whole universe, we are alone? Or is there any other living entity like us? Well, the chances are strong that there is life somewhere else too as there are millions of galaxies and billions of planets. The same belief was of the Soviet astronomer Nikolai Kardashev, he believed that not only there is a possibility of life on other planets but also there is a strong possibility of Intelligent life on other planets. Therefore, he came up with a hypothetical scale in which he divided the types of possible civilizations in the whole universe.

• Kardashev Scale(1964)-

The Kardashev Scale is a way of measuring the level of Civilization’s technological advancement based on the amount of energy it is capable of possessing and using. On the basis of the Kardashev scale, there are a total of five types of civilisations as:

1. Type 1 Civilisation-

 It is also known as Planetary civilisation. This type of civilisation is capable of possessing and using all the energy of it’s planet. This energy could be hydro-energy, energy from fossil fuels, Wind energy, Energy from sunlight which is falling on the planet’s surface, energy from Earthquakes as well as Tsunamis.

2. Type 2 Civilisation- 

It is also known as Stellar Civilization. This type of civilization is able to harness all the energy of its star (or sun). It means that it is able to possess all the energy emitted by the sun. Possessing this energy involves the hypothetical idea of the Dyson Sphere.

3. Type 3 Civilization-

It is also known as the Galactic civilization. This type of civilization is able to harness the energy of it’s whole galaxy, this includes the energy from other neighbouring stars.

• The Kardashev Cycle includes only these three civilizations but the Extensions of the Kardashev Scale have been proposed to include additional types:

5. Type 4 Civilization-

It is also known as Universal civilization. This type of Civilization is capable of possessing the energy of the whole universe, This includes energy from countless galaxies, stars, black holes, and other cosmic phenomena within the universe. It is able to utilize so much energy which we are not yet capable of thinking!

5. Type 5 Civilization-

It is also known as multiversal civilisation. A Type 5 civilization can access and use energy from multiple universes, assuming a multiverse exists. This concept implies an even higher level of advancement, where the civilization can tap into the energy and resources of different universes within the multiverse, potentially mastering the fundamental laws of nature across various dimensions and realms.

• Which Type of Civilization Are We Yet?

• Type 0 Civilization-

This type of civilization is the one which is not capable of harnessing all the energy of its planet.
Humanity currently falls into this category but is progressing towards the Type 1 civilization. According to scientists, we are 70% there.

Conclusion-

Although the Kardashev Scale provides information on a hypothetical basis by exploring the Kardashev Scale, we gain a fascinating glimpse into the potential future of human civilization and beyond. Although we are currently a type 0 civilization our capability of imagining and creating new things is infinite. Who knows in a few millions of years or perhaps even sooner- we might reach the heights of Type 5 civilization.
