When your parents are in a transferable job, choosing the correct school that will provide a strong academic base for the coming years becomes imperative. The same was true for Malaika Tandon and her husband Dineshwar Dayal; the couple works as junior accounts officers at BSNL in Jalandhar. But they had an added advantage.

“Both my husband and I work at BSNL; we get a lot of customers and many times we manage to connect with the customers. When I spoke to a few of them they said that the best school was Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg. We also did a lot of research of our own and found that the school fit our requirements. Today, my son, Gauransh Dayal, is studying in LKG at Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg in Jalandhar,” Tandon said.

Excerpts from the interview.

Both you and your husband are working. How do you spend quality time with your son?

It is a bit of a challenge since we have a six-day week and sometimes it gets late – past 7 pm. But once we are home all our time is spent with Gauransh. We live in government accommodation, the benefit is that there is a garden. Once we are back home, we go to the park and play games with him and generally spend time with him. Sundays too are spent with him. Our office starts at 10 am, we drop him off at his school where he has taken up skating. He even has a YouTube channel — https://youtube.com/@gauranshdayal. We also get an hour for lunch so we come home and eat our meals together.

How does he manage his homework and study time?

I have to give credit to his teachers. They are so amazing at this school. Full credit for my son’s progress goes to them. As working parents, we have very little contribution here. The teachers have made him independent; he manages to complete his work on his own. When I come home, I just check his work for any mistakes.

My son’s teachers tell me that he is a fast learner. Also, he manages to finish his work the fastest in his class and keeps asking for more work. So the teacher recommended that he read books

How has his learning curve been?

A year or so was spent learning online but now, with offline classes, he is doing well. His teachers tell me that he is a fast learner. Also, he manages to finish his work the fastest in his class and keeps asking for more work. So the teacher recommended that he read books. Recently, he sat for the Olympiad. Most of the things in Math he knew like counting, and missing numbers rest we taught him at home like less than and greater.

How are the teachers and do you get regular updates?

I am not a very intrusive kind of parent. I get regular feedback from the teachers and the progress that Guaransh is making and am happy with the results. The class teachers send regular updates and assignments. These interactive activities are very good since they involve the parents like watching a movie with the parents or learning to identify different plants to name a few. I love the fact that the school is also involved in ensuring the child spends as much time as possible with the parent and at the same time encourages learning in a fun manner.

How did you choose Apeejay?

After speaking with a lot of people, I visited all the schools to see how they were. When I visited Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg, I was impressed. When I spoke to the concerned staff there they were all very nice and helpful. It was such a pleasurable interaction and I was convinced that this is what we wanted for our son. It is no longer about academics; the child should have holistic development. We had gone to four schools but Apeejay fulfilled all our requirements.
