The power of kindness

“There is no need for temples, no need for complicated philosophies. My brain and my heart are my temples; my philosophy is kindness.” – This famous quote by the spiritual leader, Dalai Lama emphasises the meaning of kindness and its impact on our lives.

The healing power of kindness is amazing but not many of us realise it. Indeed, a small act of kindness can have a huge impact on the world. With our actions, we shape our world and our acts can allow us to lead a happier life.

People tend to believe in the concept of ‘survival of the fittest.’ But, Darwin who conducted research on human nature did not necessarily perceive humans as physically aggressive or self-interested. He claimed that humans are fundamentally collaborative and can form a loving community. He also asserted that affection and compassion are natural and reflexive for our species.

Even the smallest acts of kindness are worth more than the greatest inventions of mankind – a simple and apt saying in this light. However, today people have become incredibly self-absorbed. One of the reasons for this is the growing competition in our society. Most people seem to have forgotten how to love and heal at an individual and a community level.

And so, I would like to say to everyone: let’s choose to be kinder and propel light over darkness.
