Remembering Dr Stya Paul’s legacy of perseverance and educational excellence

Dr Stya Paul, an eminent industrialist, educationist, philanthropist, and freedom fighter, provided the foundation and inspiration for the emergence of the Apeejay Stya Group and Apeejay Education as trusted symbols of quality and excellence in the country’s industrial and educational landscape. 

Dr Stya Paul passed away on June 7, 2010. In honour of the same, Apeejay International School, Greater Noida, came together to pay a heartfelt tribute to Dr. Stya Paul, on his 14th punya tithi. The tribute commenced with students, teaching, and non-teaching staff paying floral tribute in memory of Dr Stya Paul. The atmosphere was filled with reverence and devotion as the assembly sang his favourite bhajans, creating a serene and reflective ambiance. 

Dr Stya Paul’s life story is one of remarkable perseverance and dedication. Despite financial constraints during his childhood, he excelled academically. He studied by lantern light in Jalandhar, as his family could not afford electricity. His hard work paid off when he secured a merit scholarship to DAV College, Jalandhar, where he showcased extraordinary talent in Mathematics. He not only achieved the first position in BA (H) in the subject but also won a gold medal and became a University record holder in Punjab for several years. 

His academic journey continued at Government College in Lahore, where he ranked third in the University’s final M.A. exam in 1941, despite navigating the campus on a manually powered tricycle. An operation in the US later enabled him to walk with calipers. Dr. Stya Paul also played an active role in India’s freedom struggle and was even imprisoned for his efforts.

Ms Sarita Pande, the Principal of Apeejay International School, Greater Noida, highlighted the qualities that made Dr Stya Paul a humble, positive, and hardworking individual. She began her speech with a shloka from the Bhagavad Gita, “Whatever actions great men perform, other men follow. Whatever examples they set, the world acts accordingly.” This quote encapsulates the essence of Dr Stya Paul’s influence and leadership.

In her address, Ms Pande emphasised Dr Stya Paul’s strong willpower, dedication, and leadership qualities that have left an indelible mark on the community. His life and work serve as a beacon of inspiration for students and educators alike, reminding them of the importance of perseverance and a commitment to making a positive difference in the world.

A beautiful message from Dr VS Garg, Education Advisor of Apeejay Education, was also shared during the ceremony. His words reinforced the values and vision of Dr Stya Paul, urging everyone to stay true to the motto “Soaring High is My Nature.” The Principal quoted Dr Stya Paul’s favourite couplet, encouraging all to pledge to uphold his values and continue striving for excellence.

The heartfelt tribute by the Apeejay International School community not only honoured the memory of Dr Stya Paul but also served as a testament to his profound impact on the institution and the wider community. His legacy of dedication, perseverance, and educational excellence continues to inspire generations of students and educators.

The tribute concluded with a collective resolve to carry forward Dr Stya Paul’s vision and ideals. The principal’s inspiring words and the participation of the entire school community highlighted the deep respect and admiration they hold for their founder.
