Gagandeep Kaur, a pre-primary teacher at Apeejay School, Tanda Road, says it is her students’ appreciation and love that keeps her going. After joining the school in 2008, the teacher nurtured many talents and left an imprint in their lives. Read on to know more about her journey:

When did you begin your journey as a teacher? What inspired you?

I completed my post-graduation in 1999, after which I joined a school as a teacher. Around that time, I felt the need to pursue BEd, which I finally completed in 2008. One day, my husband told me about a vacancy in the pre-primary wing at Apeejay. An Apeejayite till class VI, he told me about the legacy of the school and the wonderful experience he had at his alma mater. I applied for the position and that’s how my journey began at the prestigious institute.

When did you join Apeejay? What do you have to say about your experience?

I have been a part of the Apeejay family since 2008. I feel proud to be an educator and to be able to impart knowledge to my lovely students. My journey has been fulfilling. What makes Apeejay special is that it provides everyone a platform to grow mentally, intellectually, and morally. Constant opportunity for self-growth as an educator is always provided here.

What challenges does a teacher face in handling pre-primary students?

Each student has different demands and priorities. While one commonly faces challenges at the beginning, a good educator is gradually able to resolve all the issues related to the students. With more than two decades of experience now, I understand child psychology and I am able to meet the needs of each child with patience and a positive attitude.

How do you help the little ones adjust to a new environment and develop their essential skills?

It is important to understand what a child needs and that’s the first step. I try to be friendly with them and show motherly care with the attributes of patience and a smile on my face. I try to understand their relationship with their parents and family members. The little ones share their routine and best times with me. Many of them share almost every emotion with me. Gradually, I learn about their areas of interest and I help them hone their skills accordingly.

How would you describe your journey as an educator? What keeps you motivated?

Education is not a one-way process. I learn a lot from my little munchkins. Teaching is a life-long learning process. It gives me immense pleasure when my old students come to meet me. They thank me for helping them not only as an educator but also as a mother. They thank me for the way I protected and nurtured them. I feel proud to be their favorite teacher. It energises me to move forward. That’s how I get motivated.
