Golden Gloves – From one goalkeeper to another

By Harkirat Singh

Damián Emiliano Martínez is an Argentine professional footballer, who plays as a goalkeeper for Premier League club Aston Villa and the Argentina national team. At Arsenal, he served as an understudy, being loaned to various English clubs, before breaking into the starting line-up in 2019. Martínez moved to fellow Premier League club Aston Villa in a transfer worth £20 million. In his first season at the club, he kept a club record 15 clean sheets in the Premier League.

Every person is just supporting Messi that he is the GOAT (Greatest of all time) but for me, Martinez is the GOAT. He is the man behind Argentina’s wins in the world cup. He saved a lot of goals as well as penalties for Argentina. He plays good mind games and has a super high football IQ level.

Psychologists have also stated that Emi Martinez played a mind game

 Q) Is Emi Martinez good?

Here are my reasons:

1) Emi Martinez has an excellent match situation anticipation sense, coupled with the strength to back it; making him one of the most accomplished penalty-stoppers on the planet. Furthermore, he is the king of mind games, using all sorts of tactics, often underhanded and unpleasant, to put the penalty taker off during a penalty shoot-out, visible in the World Cup final against France.

2) Martínez had represented Argentina in junior international matches. He played on under-17 and under-20 levels. He has experience from the grassroots and knows the game well.

3) He earned his first senior cap for the Argentina team in 2021, helping his nation win the 2021 Copa América.

4) He won the Golden Glove trophy and kept a clean sheet in the final. Martínez went on to win the 2022 FIFA World Cup where he also won the best goalkeeper award i.e. the Golden Glove for his performance in the tournament. I am very much inspired by Martinez. He is my sole inspiration to play football. I am also a goalkeeper and working on my training to play like him. My friend is playing an important role in training me to be the best keeper.
