WhatsApp tests new AI tool for personalised avatars and stickers

WhatsApp is testing a new AI feature called ‘Imagine Me,’ which allows users to create personalised stickers and AI avatars from their photos. This feature, discovered by WABetaInfo via a leaked screenshot, leverages Meta AI to generate custom images from user-uploaded selfies. Initially spotted in the WhatsApp beta for Android version, ‘Imagine Me’ lets users enhance their profile pictures with AI-generated avatars, providing a creative alternative to traditional profile photos.

To use this feature, users will need to manually enable it in settings. Once activated, WhatsApp will prompt users to upload a few selfies. These images will then be processed by the Meta AI chatbot to create personalised stickers and avatars. Users can further customise their avatars by choosing from various backgrounds and locations, such as forests or space, to make their profile pictures more unique.

The tool is part of WhatsApp’s broader integration of AI tools, following the introduction of Meta AI chatbots in select markets, including India. This feature is designed to offer a fun and engaging way for users to personalise their experience on the platform. The ability to generate AI avatars and stickers can make interactions more dynamic and expressive.

This AI-based feature is optional and will be available through future updates. Users can initiate the feature by typing “@Meta AI Imagine me” in their chat. Meta AI, powered by the Llama 3 large language model (LLM), is already accessible on other Meta platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger.

By incorporating ‘Imagine Me,’ WhatsApp aims to enhance user engagement and provide more personalised and visually appealing profile customisation options. This innovative tool reflects Meta’s commitment to integrating advanced AI capabilities across its suite of social media and messaging applications.
