The Astronomy Club at Apeejay School, Pitampura, held an engaging spectroscopy session for Module 1 and Module 2 students. The session introduced learners to the science of light, spectra and the interaction between matter and electromagnetic radiation through a series of hands-on activities and demonstrations.

For Module 1, the session, titled Spectrum of Wonders: Exploring the Spectra of the Cosmos, focused on understanding the science of spectroscopy through the observation of solar spectra. Students explored different sources of light in their surroundings and observed how light could be separated into vibrant spectra. They also created and used their own spectroscopes, gaining first-hand experience in observing and analysing light.

The learners further investigated the spectra produced by various discharge tubes and examined how different elements emit distinct colours. A flame test demonstration helped them understand how elements can be identified through their characteristic colours when heated.

The session culminated in an engaging Keys to the Rainbow activity, where students matched observed spectra with specific elements, reinforcing the connection between light and matter. They also had the opportunity to observe the solar spectrum, witnessing the decomposition of sunlight into its constituent colours.

For Module 2, the session focused on Understanding Spectroscopy & Star Spectroscopy” Students explored the concept of the spectrum of light and developed an understanding of how matter interacts with electromagnetic radiation, particularly within the visible spectrum. They examined how variations in wavelength and frequency are reflected in different spectra and learnt how spectral patterns can provide valuable information about matter and light sources.

Through observation, experimentation and discussion, the session enabled students to connect classroom concepts with real-world astronomical phenomena. The experiential approach encouraged scientific curiosity and helped learners appreciate how spectroscopy serves as an important tool for studying the composition and properties of celestial objects.
