UGC committee proposes new university degree names

Published

In accordance with both global standards and the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the higher education regulator in India is preparing to introduce a fresh array of degree names for colleges. This includes the proposal of a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in fields such as arts, humanities, management, and commerce.

Presently, the University Grants Commission (UGC) allows universities to confer a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree for arts, humanities, and social sciences, while the Bachelor of Science (commonly abbreviated as BSc) degree is typically associated with science subjects.

However, as per the recommendations of a committee appointed by the UGC to review degree nomenclatures, in line with the NEP 2020’s call for restructuring undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, it has been suggested that the new four-year undergraduate honours (or honours with research) degree programme, regardless of the discipline, could also be offered as a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree.
