Recognising the lack of textbooks and study materials available in local languages in courses across higher education, University Grants Commission (UGC) has written to all governors and chief ministers requesting them to promote teaching, learning and production of textbooks in regional languages. “

Teaching being imparted in the mother tongue and local language in many college and university undergraduate programmes in social sciences, commerce, science, has benefitted students from all strata of our society, particularly the disadvantaged sections and those residing in rural and remote areas,” said UGC Chairman M Jagadesh Kumar.

He further stated that in order to enhance the Gross Enrolment Ratio from 27% to 50% by 2035, we must boost access to underprivileged social groups and improve reach. It is important to promote the creation or translation of textbooks and the teaching process at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels of higher education, according to him.
