It is not very often you get to see a seamless amalgamation of art, handicrafts, and a brilliant performance put up by the entire school. But this is exactly what transpired on December 22, 2023, at Apeejay International School, Greater Noida on its Annual Appreciation Day 2023-24. The spirit of Vasudev Kutumbakam (The World Is One Family) guided the evening in understanding, appreciation, and unity. The event celebrated the diversity that makes our family rich and the unity that makes it strong.

The guest of honour for the function was Pandit Deepak Maharaj (youngest son of Padma Vibhushan Pt. Birju Maharaj — 8th generation of the Kalka Bindadin). Shri Gopal Jee, the youngest scientist in India and Founder of YMRD was the guest of the day. Present at the occasion were Mr Dinesh Rai, Member, Board of Governor, Mr Shailendra, Development Social Officer Mr NN Nayyar, Senior Education Officer, Mrs Anita Paul, Education Officer, and Mrs Ritu Kohli, principal, Apeejay School, Noida.

The Annual Appreciation Day kicked off with the presentation of the ‘green planter’ to all the esteemed guests. This was followed by the Timeless Symphony by the school band and a song by the choir welcoming everyone person with – Hai Swagatam Aap Ka, Hai Abhinandan Aap Ka. This was followed by the ceremonial lighting of the lamp by the guest of honour and other dignitaries present as the school choir chanted the Om Namo Hiranya Baahave Hiranya Varnaaya Hiranya Roopaaya Hiranya Pataye Ambika Pataye Uma Pataye Pashu Pataye Namo Namah in the backdrop.

Speaking at the event, Pandit Deepakji thanked everyone including Dr Sarita Pande, principal, Apeejay International School, Greater Noida for extending the invite to him, “It’s a great honour for me today to be present here. I’ll speak a bit in Hindi because you all know that we are storytellers, narrators of tales. From as far back as I can remember, spanning seven generations, my guru, my father, the ‘Kathak Samrat’, the one and only Kathak legend, Padma Vibhushan Pandit Birju Maharaj, has been guiding me. The language we express ourselves in is the language of stories. And since I am on the stage, I can’t let this opportunity go to give you a small performance from the classical movie Devdas that was choreographed by Pandit Birju Maharajji,” Pandit Deepak said and went on to mesmerise the audience with a rendition from the film.

Taking the centrestage, Mr Rai greeted everyone with a heartfelt welcome to all the esteemed guests including Deepak Maharaj, Mr Gopal Jee, Mr Nayyar,  and Dr Pande. “As we gather for this Annual Appreciation Day, it’s a time to recognise and applaud the commendable efforts put forth by all. I’d like to extend my appreciation to the parents who have shown immense dedication to their children’s growth. The teachers, undoubtedly, have been tireless throughout the year, nurturing brilliant minds and exceptionally talented students.

“During this function, some students will receive awards, while others may not. However, there’s no need to be disheartened. For those who may not have performed as well, there is ample room for improvement in the coming year. Let’s not lose hope. Often, we witness students who may not excel initially, but when the right time comes, they surpass expectations. So, let’s appreciate the hard work put in by our dedicated teachers with a round of applause,” Mr Rai said.

He also said that we should remember Founder-Chairman Dr Stya Paul, whose visionary zeal has led to the establishment of numerous schools across four states. Apeejay Schools have consistently excelled in producing not just students but responsible citizens with strong values.

“A special mention must be made of Mrs Sushma Paul Berlia, Chairman, Apeejay Education, and Chancellor Apeejay Stya University, whose significant contributions have undoubtedly benefited all educational institutes under the group. Let’s give her a resounding round of applause,” Mr Rai said.

Coming back to addressing the parents, he said that the parents’ role in shaping young minds is pivotal. “Your support and guidance have been the driving force behind your children’s endeavours. Parenting is a journey, not a destination. It requires constant guidance, especially in today’s era of online classes and screen-based applications. While academic success is essential, fostering qualities like resilience, kindness, and an inquisitive mind is equally important. Students, you are the architects of your destiny. Embrace challenges, discover your potential, dream high, and work hard to achieve your goals.

“Let’s also recognise the need to assist the less fortunate. I’ve witnessed instances of rickshaw pullers selflessly risking their lives to save children in distress. Helping such individuals is not only our duty but a significant contribution to society. Remember, character holds utmost importance, followed by health. As we navigate this temple of learning, let us instill and uphold these values. With excellent sports facilities and a plethora of extracurricular activities, our school aims to produce well-rounded individuals. Once again, I extend a warm welcome to all the parents who play a crucial role in shaping their children’s destinies. Special appreciation to the hardworking teaching staff. With over 400 students, we envision this school, already highly rated in Greater Noida, and the NCR, achieving even greater heights,” Mr Rai said.

Speaking at the function, Mr Nayyar said that it is an honour to have among us Deepak Maharajji, Gopal Jee, Mrs Anita Paul, and Mrs Ritu Kohli. “Let’s appreciate the performances of the students and the cultural programme that is about to be staged. I extend my congratulations to the principal and the children who have performed and demonstrated dance and academic achievements. Their performances have been truly commendable. I’m also delighted to acknowledge the parents, and supporting organisations connected with the school. I’m confident that their relationship with Apeejay International School in Greater Noida will flourish further, resulting in better graduates for the school,” Mr Nayyar said and shared the struggles of Founder-Chairman Dr Stya Paul’s life.

“Despite facing many challenges, the boy, the eldest of four brothers and three sisters, established himself in Jalandhar. In 1967, when he was refused a job, he decided to start a school in Jalandhar, known as Apeejay School Mahavir Marg. Through this journey, he attracted many supporters and collaborators, all drawn to his vision.

“With dedication and a commitment to quality education, he achieved wonders not only in India but also abroad. Today, Dr Stya Paul’s legacy is being carried forward by his only child, Mrs Sushma Paul BerliaMr Nishant Berlia, Co-Promoter Apeejay Stya and Svran Group and Pro-Chancellor, Apeejay Stya University; Mr Aditya Berlia, Co-Promoter of Apeejay Stya and Svran Group and Pro-Chancellor of Apeejay Stya University; Dr Neha Berlia, Co-Promoter of Apeejay Stya & Svran Group and Pro-Chancellor of Apeejay Stya University,” Mr Nayyar said.

Addressing the parents and grandparents, Mr Nayyar said that it is your initiative that has propelled this school to complete 25 years soon. “Under the dynamic leadership of principal, Dr Sarita Pandey, the school has grown day by day, strengthening moment by moment. I congratulate all the students in your academic pursuits, extracurricular activities, and sports. The management has provided excellent infrastructure, academic support, and sports facilities. Instructors are available, and the only thing required is the willingness of students to build upon it and move ahead on the path of excellence,” Mr Nayyar said.

The students performance the Timeless Symphony

Gopal Jee while addressing the students said that is it important to think outside the box and embrace technology. Sharing his journey till the time he was adjudged the youngest scientist in India, Gopal Jee said that while marks are important, the drive within each child is more important. He thanked the Apeejay School, Dr Pande, and other guests present. It is truly amazing to see young students showing their talent besides academics. Education is our birthright. If we want to change our society, we must be educated. “You (students) must look for the talent in you and explore that. Education must contribute to humanity, society, and the nation. Our nation was called a vishwa guru and the same holds today. We have a population of 140 crore and we all put our brains together we can achieve great heights,” Gopal Jee said.

Sharing with the parents was the school’s Annual Report that was presented by Dr Pande. She shared that the school was ranked No 1 for the third consecutive time by the Times School Survey. She also shared the achievements and contributions of Mrs Sushma Paul BerliaChairman, Apeejay Education, and Chancellor Apeejay Stya UniversityMr Nishant Berlia, Co-Promoter Apeejay Stya and Svran Group and Pro-Chancellor, Apeejay Stya University; Mr Aditya Berlia, Co-Promoter of Apeejay Stya and Svran Group and Pro-Chancellor of Apeejay Stya University; Dr Neha Berlia, Co-Promoter of Apeejay Stya & Svran Group and Pro-Chancellor of Apeejay Stya University.

Performance by the students

The students then took the stage to share the various achievements of students in various fields including sports at zonal, state, and national levels, CBSE class X and XII results, and achievements in extracurricular activities like painting. The highlight of the achievement was the Dr Stya Paul Award for Human Values.

What set the stage on fire was the performance by the tiny tots in their colourful attire. They sang and danced as the audience tapped their feet and clapped encouraging them for their brilliant show. This was followed by Lord Shiva’s tandav, another amazing performance by the students that set the mood for the other performances that followed suit.

But what caught the attention of the audience was the performance that showcased Vasudev Kutumbakam and everyone on a global journey – From Japan to Norway to the US and back to India. Through small skits, the students showed the culture of each country. From Japan IKIGAI and martial arts. Here the students showed their prowess in the art form that wowed everyone present. The next stop was Norway and the students showed the dance and culture native to the region. From the US, they showcased the journey of how an Indian-origin boy became the CEO of a top company.

Of course, no story can be complete without mentioning India.  The skits showcased different dances and cultures from the states and their rich heritage. The students also showed the nation’s prowess in space and India’s Moon Mission to the South Pole.
