Dr. Sandeep Ranjan, Dean , AIMETC along with first year BCA, MCA, B.Tech (CSE) students visited the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) Jalandhar Office for an industrial trip.

The Apeejay Institute of Management & Engineering Technical Campus (AIMETC) recently organised an industrial visit for its students to provide them insights into the working environment of the telecom sector and exposure to the latest technological trends.
First year students of the Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA), Master of Computer Applications (MCA), Bachelor in Technology (B.Tech) and Computer Science Engineering (CSE) visited the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) Jalandhar Office.  The students aimed to gain familiarity with the basics of the Internet, networking and telecom domains.

Dr. Sandeep Ranjan, Dean, School of Engineering & Technology, AIMETC accompanied the students on the field trip. Speaking about the purpose of the visit he said, “First semester students were not much aware of the different terminologies and concepts of the telecom industry. So, we decided to take them on a field trip. We briefed them about the two different technologies, one being the fixed line i.e. broadband landline and the other as mobile internet. BSNL covers broadband internet.” He added, “The officials showed us many sophisticated equipment and explained to us how they were connected to each other. The students really enjoyed it when they saw the machines that helped them use apps such as Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram.”

Dr Sandeep stated, “We also observed the equipment used during repair whenever there is any natural calamity that breaks the connection of wires. All the equipment is made of fibre optic cable and operates on the principle of light. Thus they use lasers and lights. Despite being a public sector undertaking, BSNL uses cutting-edge technologies. It was an eye-opening visit for the students.”

Mr. Rohit, Sub divisional engineer and Mr. Sidharth Shama, Junior telecom officer, BSNL explained the networking technicalities and devices in the BSNL office and also answered queries raised by the students.

Said Abhishiv Khashu, a B. Tech first year student who visited the site, “We asked the officials a lot of questions such as enquiring about the bandwidth of the modems in use. They explained many technical details to us such as the secure socket layer i.e. the act of securing the information that passes through the wires. It was a very informative visit for us. We got to learn something new.”

Dimple Kohli, a B. Tech first year student, stated, “Everyone in the BSNL office was very cooperative. They were guiding us, telling us about the routers, transformers and how the generators work. I really enjoyed the trip. I even researched it after going home. I felt so inspired.”

“Knowledge about the working of fibre optics technology (FTTH) was provided by BSNL during the industrial visit organised for students of BCA, MCA and B Tech (CSE). Such industrial visits add up to the practical knowledge and exposure of the youth, as knowledge from books alone does not serve the purpose of making them industry ready”.
