He calls the game of tennis a sport epitomising precision, power, and passion, along with the thrill, which is incomparable. Meet Rohan Bhatia, who is studying in class XII at Apeejay SchoolPanchsheel Park. In a candid interview, he shares his undying spirit and love for tennis and Rafael Nadal.

Tell us about your recent achievements.

I recently participated in a Delhi Tennis Tournament organised by DDA at one of their sports complexes in Saket. It was open to various categories like U-12, U-14, U-16, and U-18. I participated in the U-18 Singles category and won the Runners Up position. It was a wonderful experience and challenging too since there were many experienced players in the fray.

Who is your inspiration?

My inspiration is the greatest tennis player of all time, Nadal. His passion, his aggression, and his commitment to the game are what drive me to play and perform. Although he has just recently retired from the game, I will continue to look up to him and be inspired.

How did Apeejay School support your journey?

My school has been supportive by allowing me to practice the game and letting me participate as per convenience. Even if I missed my classes, the teachers supported me to cover up and not be left behind. The encouragement and support have motivated me to play and perform.

Share your training regime.

I work on my fitness with my coach to ensure that I stay agile and flexible on the court. My coach ensures that I follow a carefully crafted regime even when I am not playing any tournaments. I do love cycling and swimming and also go for regular cycling marathons of 25 or 50 km. This helps me remain fit and disciplined even off the court.

What’s your ambition?

My ambition is to be able to serve my country; I wish to join the Armed Forces and perform to the best of my abilities.

Would you like to take up tennis professionally?

If I get selected for the Armed Forces, I can continue my passion for the game of tennis. I surely would love to represent my country at an international level if given an opportunity.

Any special diet you follow?

I think nothing is better than ghar ka khana. A home-cooked meal is the best diet you can follow. I try to limit my sugar intake and focus more on natural foods like fruits and vegetables.

How has tennis changed your life?

Playing any sport can bring about discipline in anyone’s life. Personally, tennis has definitely taught me a lot in terms of discipline, strategising, confidence, and aggression at the right time. Also, teamwork is what you learn when you play a doubles game. For me, tennis is the best stress buster; being on the court helps me calm down and focus better.
