State-wise status of schools reopening across India

As the Covid situation gets better, several states are planning to resume physical classes. Here’s the state-wise update of reopening of schools:

Delhi
“Students of class 10 to 12 in the city are permitted to visit their schools from August 9 (Monday) for admission-related work including counselling, guidance and practical activities for board exams. Health checkups and referral services situated in schools or conducted from there can resume. Children of all age may visit these centres accompanied by their parents or guardians,” the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) order stated.

Maharashtra
Physical classes in Maharashtra will resume in both rural and urban areas from August 17. “Offline classes will commence in rural areas for students from classes 5 to 8, while those in cities will be for students from classes 8 to 12 following Covid-19 protocols,” Maharashtra Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad said. On-campus classes, however, will be allowed only in the areas where Covid-19 infections are consistently low, the minister added.

Meghalaya
Meghalaya Education Minister Lakhmen Rymbui has announced that the state government will most likely reopen the educational institutes after mid-August. “About 50 percent of students eligible to get the Covid-19 vaccination have taken the vaccine. This is expected to increase further by mid-August,” he said.

Karnataka
Offline classes for students of 9 and 10 grades, and for pre-university college students (equivalent to Classes 11 and 12)  to resume from August 23. “We have decided to reopen schools in two phases. In the first phase, (offline) classes for students in grades 9, 10, and in PU will begin from August 23, subject to conditions. Students will be classified into two batches with classes being held on alternate days,” Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said.

Uttar Pradesh
The Uttar Pradesh government had announced the reopening of schools for intermediate students from August 16, 2021, with 50 per cent capacity. The classes in higher educational institutes will commence from September 1.

Andhra Pradesh
Andhra Pradesh government has decided to resume school for class 12 or intermediate students from August 16. With the resumption of physical classes, online classes will also continue with physical classes. Schools have been asked to follow Covid protocols.

Tamil Nadu
The schools in Tamil Nadu are set to reopen for students of Classes 9 to 12 from September 01 after being shut for over a year due to the pandemic situation. Medical colleges in the state have also been allowed to reopen from August 16, 2021.

West Bengal
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee recently said the state government is considering reopening schools and colleges after Durga Puja vacations, with classes on alternate days to start with. “However, nothing has been finalised just yet,” Banerjee added.

Odisha
Schools across Odisha had reopened for students of classes 10 and 12 on July 26. The state government is also planning to reopen schools for classes 9 and 11 from August 16 and September 15 respectively.
