SheRNI: UGC’s new initiative to promote women participation in science and research

In a groundbreaking move, the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) Information and Library Network (INFLIBNET) Centre has unveiled the She Research Network in India (SheRNI), a transformative initiative dedicated to promoting gender equity in the realm of scientific research. This cutting-edge platform aims to connect and showcase the profiles of 81,818 Indian women actively contributing to various scientific and research disciplines.

SheRNI goes beyond being a mere database; it is a dynamic space designed to empower women scientists and faculty members, fostering robust professional connections, mentorship opportunities, and avenues for career advancement. The UGC, through SheRNI, envisions a landscape where women professionals collaboratively propel the advancement of science and research across diverse domains.

UGC Chairman M Jagadesh Kumar emphasises the importance of recognising women scientists and faculty members as essential pillars for the development of India. He envisions their contributions, research outcomes, and scalable solutions gaining visibility through this initiative.

SheRNI’s extensive database sheds light on the substantial impact women faculty members have on scientific progress. Presently featuring 81,818 profiles, the platform showcases a wealth of information with 675,313 publications and 11,543 patents, underscoring the pivotal role women play in driving innovation and scientific advancements.

The platform is not merely a repository of information, rather  it is a powerful tool to facilitate collaboration and knowledge sharing among women experts. UGC’s official announcement on platforms like Twitter highlights SheRNI’s role as an expert profile network system connecting over 81,000 women researchers and scientists actively engaged in knowledge generation across diverse disciplines.

SheRNI, essentially a large online community for knowledgeable women, serves as a conduit for sharing expertise and supporting one another. Its overarching goals include building a comprehensive database of women experts in various fields and providing a seamless platform for sharing knowledge and experiences. The initiative seeks to create opportunities for women to collaborate, learn from each other, and collectively contribute to the progress of science and research.
