Her knowledge for literature began at an early age with short stories of Panchatantra. Vanshika Choudhary, a class 7 student from Apeejay School, Kharghar fell in love with the ‘Harry Potter’ novel series when she was 9 and since that time, has been an avid reader. In an interview, the winner of this week’s Scholar-Journalist contest explains how. Read on:

Your winning piece is about the importance of Literature. What is your perspective on it?

I believe that reading develops one’s mind and thinking. Whatever one reads impacts their mind and shapes their overall personality.

What kind of books do you like to read?

I really look up to the Harry Potter novel series. I even like reading mystery-oriented books by the American author, Ron Roy.

Do you practice writing on a regular basis?

The thing I swear by is to write down whatever goes on in my mind. I have several unfinished pieces, preliminary thoughts which I keep writing on my laptop. I believe that this exercise helps me develop fresh ideas.

How do you balance reading regularly with academics?

I try to take out time for it during summer breaks or weekends. My fluency and vocabulary has increased due to reading and my father has encouraged me to do so.

Your tips for those wanting to start at writing?

Just start! Don’t think about the quality. For example, one of my friends and I were reading a short story on the Apeejay Newsroom website and we thought that we would give the story our own ending. We did so, and shared with each other our thought processes and ideas. It was a fruitful activity as it enhanced our power of imagination and writing skills.
