Internationally acclaimed Odissi dancer Ms Kavita Dwibedi recently performed a beautiful dance at Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg, leaving the audience enthralled with her graceful dance postures. The special event was organised in collaboration with the Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture amongst Youth (SPIC MACAY), which promotes awareness of the Indian culture and traditions among the youth in schools and colleges.

It is said that dance is like poetry in motion. Ms Dwibedi’s Odissi performance was indeed a testimony to this—her deep and composite understanding of the art was vividly reflected in her captivating expressions and movements. Her performance was complemented by instrumentalists and percussionists Mr Ramchandra Behera, Mr Suresh Sethi, and Mr Yar Mohammad.

The programme was also attended by several parents.

Ms Dwibedi, daughter and disciple of veteran Odissi maestro Guru Harekrishna Behera, is the proud recipient of the Odisha State Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for the year 2013. She has also been conferred Mahari Award, Sanyukta Panigrahi Award and Mahila Shirimani Award. The director of Odissi Akademi and founder trustee of “Sanchari Foundation”, Ms Dwibedi is deemed one of the finest Odissi artistes in India today. She has been organising workshops globally for SPIC MACAY.

At the event, the renowned artiste also interacted with the school students. She explained to them the meaning of certain gestures and mudras in Odissi. Her demonstration piqued the interest of students in the classical dance form.

“It was a very nice experience. This was an effort to inculcate traditional values in children. I had a wonderful interaction with the students. They reciprocated and answered my questions enthusiastically,” said Ms Dwibedi. “I am thankful to Apeejay and the principal Mr Girish Kumar for having me at their school and giving me this opportunity to showcase the richness of Indian culture.”

“It was a unique and divine experience to watch Ms Kavita Dwibedi perform. Apart from performing, she explained the nuances of Odissi to the students. All seemed transported to a different world altogether. My hearty compliments to SPICMACAY and Ms Kavita Dwibedi.”
