Ola, the Indian ride-hailing company, has introduced its native large language model, Krutrim, with the aim of dominating the local market. During a presentation in Bengaluru, CEO Bhavish Aggarwal showcased Krutrim’s language capabilities, demonstrating its proficiency in responding to queries not only in English but also in 10 different Indian languages, including Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu.
Aggarwal emphasised the need for a home grown solution, expressing the belief that foreign AI models lack the depth to comprehend the intricacies of Indian languages and culture. Krutrim is specifically designed for desi users, developed from scratch and trained on an extensive dataset of 2 trillion tokens sourced locally. This focused approach results in an AI model that excels in understanding contextual references and colloquial phrases specific to Indian languages.
Ola offers two versions of its AI models – Krutrim and Krutrim Pro. The base Krutrim model comprehends 22 Indian languages and can generate responses in 10 languages. It reportedly outperforms benchmarks for Indian-language understanding when compared to models like GPT-4 and Llama. Additionally, Krutrim supports voice input and can respond in voice, akin to the latest iterations of ChatGPT.
