The National Exit Test (NExT) is a postgraduate medical exam designed to serve as a qualifying exam for final year MBBS students and a licentiate exam enabling Indian medical professionals to practice modern medicine.

Recently, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has announced that NExT will consist of two steps. Step 1 will be a computer-based examination comprising of high-quality Multiple Choice Questions. Step 2, on the other hand, will be a practical or clinical examination.

To provide flexibility, both NExT Step 1 and NExT Step 2 will be conducted twice a year. The inaugural batch of students, who were admitted to the MBBS course in 2019, will be the first group to participate in this examination.

The prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi will be responsible for conducting NExT Step 1 in the months of May and November. Following the completion of their internship, students will be eligible to appear for NExT Step 2. The exams for Step 2 will be held in June and December.

By implementing these measures, the NMC aims to ensure a comprehensive evaluation process for medical students, combining theoretical knowledge and practical skills to assess their readiness for professional practice.
