Kunal Nagpal did B Sc in Physics from Delhi University, but destiny had something else for him. After realising that Physics isn’t his cup of tea, he decided to put his feet into the creative field of advertising. He then completed his Post Graduation Diploma in Advertising from Apeejay Institute of Mass Communication (AIMC), and is currently working as a Copywriter at Wunderman Thompson. During a telephonic interview, the creative expert talks about his journey. Read edited excerpts:

What made you join AIMC? Tell us about your journey.

Before joining Apeejay, I was working as a digital marketing specialist. That was the time when I realised that my interest lies in the creative field and I wanted to work in the advertising sector – not just generating ads but creating them – like writing ad copies and then filming. So, I decided to enroll myself for an advertising course and learn the basics of it.

While searching for a course in advertising, Apeejay Institute of Mass Communication was the only recognised institute I could find in Delhi. I enrolled for the PG Diploma course in Advertising and after one year, I got the placement as a creative trainee at FCB India. I would say that Apeejay helped me realise that the advertising world is not a difficult one to crack. If you have the dedication, you’re anyhow going to make it.

How did Apeejay help you in your professional journey?

I was clueless about stepping into the advertising world. That’s why I enrolled at Apeejay to prioritise my learning. I wanted to go through the right way, where I learn the basics, get proper training and create a pavement for myself in this creative world. With my immense skills and dedication, I got placed at FCB as a creative trainee. It was the best job Apeejay could find for me as it is one of the top 3 advertising companies in India. I am really satisfied with my learning at Apeejay.

What do you enjoy at your job?

Creative ideas take time and I really like this thing about my company that they don’t force us to give ideas in a particular time limit. We do brainstorming, meet people, and sit with client servicing teams, creative directors to figure out things. This is what I wanted to do and I am very happy that I got this opportunity.

Tips you would like to give your juniors to establish a career in advertising.

I believe that AIMC is an amazing place to learn practical aspects of communication. It will teach you a lot as well as reward you. I would say listen to what the teachers say as the professors at Apeejay are wanting to create the students industry-ready. So, listen to them and you will grow in the way you can never even imagine. Just keep creating good things and always trust your instincts.
