Mathematics is often perceived as a subject of logic and calculations, but at Apeejay School, Noida, it was transformed into an artistic and imaginative experience through the Intra-class Mathematics Competition – Numbertoons. Held recently for the young mathematicians of Class III, this unique event combined numerical concepts with creativity, storytelling, and artistic expression, making learning both engaging and enjoyable.

The competition was meticulously designed to strengthen the innovativeness and creative thinking of students while enhancing their problem-solving abilities and communication skills. In an era where holistic development is emphasized, Numbertoons proved to be an excellent initiative in fostering an interdisciplinary approach to learning. The competition not only improved the mathematical aptitude of the students but also enriched their attention span, fine motor skills, and confidence.

The competition required students to create imaginative artwork using four randomly assigned digits (from 0 to 9) and transform them into cartoons, animals, objects, or emojis. This activity encouraged the young minds to view numbers beyond their numerical value and explore their artistic potential. They were allotted 45 minutes to draw and decorate their creations, followed by a storytelling segment where they had to weave a fascinating tale incorporating the characters they had drawn. The story had to be meaningful, conveying a moral lesson, and was required to have an interesting title. Each participant was given two minutes to narrate their story, showcasing their creativity, confidence, and expression.

The structure of the competition ensured that students were engaged in multiple skill-enhancing activities simultaneously. While the artistic aspect honed their visualisation and fine motor skills, the storytelling part strengthened their language proficiency, logical thinking, and public speaking abilities.

The young participants showcased their incredible imagination by crafting unique characters from numbers and narrating engaging stories with moral values. From adorable animals and quirky cartoons to thought-provoking stories, the students surprised the judges and teachers with their ingenuity.

After an intense and inspiring session of storytelling and presentations, the best performers were awarded for their outstanding efforts. The winners were as follows:

Overall Winners: First Position – Gaurang Vats (III-D) and Suruchi Tandon (III-B) and second position – Aashwe Minhas (III-A)

Best in Class: 3A – Sharanya Negi, 3B – Anaya Upadhyay, 3C – Ansh Sharma, 3D – Gauri Sachan, and 3E – Enaya Goel.

Each winner demonstrated remarkable artistic skills, creativity, and storytelling abilities, making their presentations stand out.

The competition was a memorable experience for both students and teachers. It was not only a test of mathematical and artistic abilities but also a fun-filled learning opportunity. The Primary In-charge, Ms Smriti Samuel, extended her heartfelt congratulations to all participants and winners. She applauded their efforts and emphasized the importance of such competitions in nurturing creativity, confidence, and innovative thinking.

With such creative initiatives, the school continues to inspire young minds to see learning as an adventure — one where numbers can transform into characters, stories can come alive, and imagination knows no bounds.
