‘Merchandise’: Poem by Poulami Saha, Apeejay Institute of Mass Communication

Merchandise

What do you sell? O you the greatest of all creations?
Speeches with logic and emotions
Bringing reasons to statements, yet failing to make major changes

What did you build, oh you the greatest of all creations?
Hollow societies based on caste, creed and religion
Bringing walls of differences, yet talking about unity in diversity

What do you stock up, O you the greatest of all creations?
Anger, hatred and revenge
Spreading differences and creating tragedy
Yet, preaching forgiveness and talking about love

What do you create, O you the greatest of all creations?
Giving birth to children’s to love them all

Yet there is difference among men, women and those that include all

What do you import, O you the greatest of all creations?
Weapons, explosives and vehicles for war
Destroying the place, which is a home to all
Yet talking about peace and harmony among all!

So, what are you really selling? Oh you the greatest of all!
Humans selling women, children and men under the red lights
Poverty, inequality and hunger
Yet making deceptive relations of brothers and sisters.
