Saanvi Mishra, a class 9 student at Apeejay School, Saket, is quite serious about art. She knows it is no child’s play and one needs to put in hours to master this skill. In this week’s Apeejay Aspiring Artist interview, Saanvi speaks about her love for Mandala artwork and how she got introduced to it through YouTube. Read edited excerpts:

Since when did you start with art?

I have had an interest in drawing since childhood. I gradually started out with my YouTube channel as well. I would upload shorts of my origami drawings in the form of a fast forward video. It was during that time that I would scroll daily through YouTube, watching several art videos. And that was when I saw Mandala art for the first time and it fascinated me a lot.

Is Mandala artwork your favourite?

Absolutely! I was simply bowled over when I saw it for the first time. I started loving it even more as I practiced it. One needs a lot of concentration to make the Mandala designs.

How much time does one Mandala artwork take?

It takes me 2-3 hours for one Mandala artwork (excluding the time taken for the finishing touches). I take ideas of a design from other artworks but improvise it using my imagination.

How does your school support you as an artist?

Maharana sir, my school art teacher, taught me the basics of art. His encouragement meant a lot to me.

Some art tips for beginners?

If you have a genuine interest in art, pursue it only then. Art requires lots of concentration. You will have to practice a lot, put in the hours and the work.

Upcoming artworks?

A series of Mandala artworks. I will be making a lot of mythological figures, various Gods and Goddesses. I will make them after my exams.

How do you balance art alongside studies?

I do art in my free time after studies. It does not distract me, but is a great way of refreshment.

Finally, what is art for you?

Art is a feeling. My soul is at peace whenever I practice it. Art uplifts me no matter how I am feeling.
