Master Your Studies: Knowing your learning style is crucial for academic success

Embracing a particular learning style lets the students enhance their study habits and reduce exam stress

Knowing and adjusting one’s learning style, from an academic point of view, is not a preference but a very influential strategy for improving educational results. For learners, it makes all the difference to know whether they are visual, auditory, or kinesthetic learners. Everybody does it differently. By defining their type of learner, students will be in a position to adjust the study techniques to their natural — which may be key to engaging their cognitive skills and overall academic endurance at best.

Visual Learners

For them, things work much better and are retained if they come across information in a visual format. They do not compromise on their performance with the help of diagrams, charts, and written directions. In the case of these kinds of learners, not only does it help if the learning is visualized, but it also helps to retain it that way. Methods like working with colour-coded notes or mind maps, or watching relevant videos are thus no doubt helpful in that direction. Flashcards will also help as useful tools to be used for quick review or memorisation of facts.

Auditory Learners

Such learners understand information better if it is heard or spoken. They perform great with lectures, discussions, and explaining concepts out loud to other people. To enhance this, the auditory learners should record lectures to replay them, join study groups with a high need for verbal interaction, and use mnemonic devices involving acoustic cues. For instance, reading textbooks aloud is very effective in increasing the rates of retention.

Kinesthetic Learners

They are hands-on learners and learn by doing. This can be accomplished by introducing movement into your studying, pacing while going over your flashcards, or acting out the material you want to learn. This can also be done through lab sessions and/or building models to help cement the material being learned.

What is Your Learning Style?

One gets to know his/her learning style by reflection and observation. A student has to consider the following: What kind of information presentation makes it easier to understand and remember? Students can try different techniques of studying and see, by observation, which increases their efficiency in learning.

Knowing one’s learning style is the first step to academic empowerment. Not only does this make students more aware of themselves, but also equips them with the wherewithal to meet educational challenges. By accepting the chosen learning style, a student can adjust his/her study habits accordingly to find an optimum learning method and less stress during exams. Such a developed approach will help one to achieve better grades and a more profound and satisfying process of learning.
